applecross pinot noir 2022
Hand-picked D clone pinot noir with two weeks on skins and 20% whole-bunch fermentation before being pressed straight to older French puncheons and barriques (no new oak) for maturation and malolactic fermentation.
A delicate, pretty and fragrant representation of pinot noir from the Upper Yarra.
Reviews:
‘Partial whole-bunch fermentation (20%) and three days on skins before maturation in older French puncheons and barriques. A very bright crimson. Red-fruited and perfumed with its dusting of alpine flowers and gentle spice. Light to medium bodied with well-judged, fine-grained, 'al dente' tannins and the bright acidity that's always been the hallmark of wines from this cool site. A joy to drink now and over the next few years.’

The 2022 Applecross Pinot Noir is bright, silky and juicy, with a palate that is shaped by savory tannins. One assumes there is a proportion of whole bunch here, and if so, it has been integrated into the wine with great sophistication. I like the blade-edge of precision here. There is red apple skin, sumac, white pepper, goji berry and tapenade, and the caper-brine acidity is like a saline pool within. It is ultra fine.
